Greyhound cocktail is a simple and delicious drink. Made of only 2 ingredients, it is pretty quick to mix. Traditionally, it is made from grapefruit juice and gin, making it not only easy to prepare, but also the perfect sweet and sour combination that is desired from a spiked fruit drink. But vodka can be used instead of gin.
We don’t know exactly when the Greyhound was invented. What we do know is that it has existed since before 1930. It was mentioned in Henry Caddock’s 1930 book, the Savoy Cocktail Book. He calls it “… a variation of the Grapefruit Cocktail”, which most likely means that such drinks were common before the book was written.
Try to use freshly squeezed grapefruit juice for your cocktail. Pink grapefruit juice adds a fun pink color that’s perfect for girls’ night, brunch or just any occasion.
The most suitable grapefruit juice is both sweet and sour. Grapefruit is, by nature, a bit acidic. So if your juice is too sour, you can add a little simple syrup to the cocktail to cut back on the acidity.

Gin vs VodkaMany simple cocktails that we make with vodka today originally used gin or some other spirit. This is also the case with the Greyhound drink. Unfortunately, gin is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is a complex and bitter spirit. Therefore spiking up fruity drinks or fruit juices with gins brings along complex aromas and tastes from juniper and other botanicals that the gin is made from. Vodka on the other hand is usually flavorless. So, if you do not like gin’s flavors, by all means go for vodka based drinks. A vodka Greyhound drink is equally good!
