Story Behind Malibu Rum
As the legend goes, a coconut quietly fell into a barrel of rum lying under coconut palms on a beach. After lying there for a certain time, the coconut gave the rum an unusual taste. Noticing this, rum producers began experimenting with recipes for mixing rum and coconut extract, resulting in a modern recipe for Malibu rum.

In truth, almost no one believes in the above story about the origins of Malibu coconut rum. The real reason for introducing Malibu into production was economic problems. The bitter Caribbean rum sold poorly.
To overcome this issue, the manufacturers of Malibu rum conducted a study. They managed to find out that Pina Colada was enjoying unprecedented popularity in the Caribbean. As you may know, this is a cocktail combining coconut and rum. This prompted the company’s technologists to review the recipe. It was decided to reduce the cost of Pina Colada, while leaving the taste advantages of the cocktail. Black molasses was added to the product, and all harmful components were excluded.
The rum quickly gained the respect of connoisseurs of exotic alcohol. The entire production moved to Barbados, and the finished product began to be bottled in Scotland. Now Malibu rum brand produces about 20 rums, sparkling wines and cocktails.
How Malibu Rum is Produced
The Malibu rum is made as follows.
- Fermentation – first, the juice of selected sugarcane undergoes thorough fermentation, to convert sugar into alcohol.
- Distillation – after fermentation comes the distillation process. To achieve a unique and soft rum base that is saturated with the aroma and taste of real fresh coconut, specialists distill only fresh sugarcane molasses, not fermented. This process is repeated 3 times in special distillation columns and the resulting drink is purified using powerful filters to make the rum light, natural, high-quality and fresh.
- Aging – after distillation, a small part of the rum is aged 1-2 years in barrels, which are made from the best American oak species and only according to ancient traditions, without a single nail or gluing. Thanks to this technology, the drink acquires more aromatic properties and retains the best taste.
- Flavoring – and in the final stage of rum production, the alcohol is mixed with natural aromatic additives of coconut, pineapple and mango. All these ingredients create a unique taste of Malibu rums.
How to drink Malibu Rum
To begin with, Malibu is drunk according to the same rules as all other liquors. That is, from special liquor glasses, slowly and in small sips. It is best to serve this drink as a dessert, that is, after a meal. It can be drunk in its pure and undiluted form or in combination with other drinks in the form of cocktails.
Malibu-based cocktails can be simple, two-component, and complex multi-component. The following cocktails are considered to be simple easy types: Malibu with cola, Malibu with pineapple juice, Malibu with milk, Malibu with tonic, etc.
In addition to light two-component cocktails, there are also killer cocktails based on this rum: Malibu with vodka, with whiskey or cognac. The proportions of two-component cocktails, as a rule, are arbitrary, and depend on individual taste preferences.
Complex cocktails with this rum are currently most widely used in various entertainment venues – nightclubs, bars, restaurants. Here are the most common names: Banana Daiquiri, Tropical Kiss, Malibu Margarita, etc.
But the most popular and widespread cocktail is called Pina Colada – a traditional Caribbean alcoholic cocktail consisting of a mixture of pineapple juice and coconut liquor. Initially, the recipe for this cocktail involved the use of light rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice, but recently the first two components have simply been replaced with Malibu Coconut rum.
If we talk about the combination of rum liquor with other products, then the choice is small and mainly desserts. For example, this strong drink goes well with oranges, lemons, grapes, apples, or ice cream.
It is worth noting that rum liquor is a good basis for various soft drinks, and can also be widely used in cooking, as a substitute for syrup.
Malibu Rums Flavors
Initially, the Malibu brand only had the original coconut flavored rum. But in recent years the line has been replenished with new products. These rums are completely transparent, and their strength does not exceed 21%. The other popular options are:
- Mango Flavored (rum mixed with mango extract);
- Passion Fruit Flavored (lilac bottle contains passion fruit extract);
- Pineapple Flavored (orange bottle, pineapple extract);
- Banana Flavored (yellow bottle, contains banana extract inside).
